Week Eleven

This week Sheila and I had two practices. The lesson on Monday covered healthy eating habits and balance. We played a little game with a piece of paper that had different healthy habits on it and they went around asking each other which healthy habits they did. If their partner has done that habit before then they would sign the box of the habit. We also played a game that tested the girls’ knowledge of the different food groups.  The lesson on Wednesday covered being grateful and having attitudes of gratitude. We played a game where each girl would have a partner and was given a topic or situation and one of them would pretend to be ungrateful and the other girl would be grateful. The girl who was pretending to be grateful would correct whatever the ungrateful girl said. During the girls’ forty minute workout, they wrote down things they were grateful for such as the elderly or animals. We are currently planning ahead for our future practices with the girls. We plan to keep moving our Girls on the Run program forward and teaching the younger girls healthy habits.
Sheila and I will not be posting for the next couple of weeks due to school breaks. See you then!

Week Ten

This week, Katie and I prepared for our lessons this week. Our lesson was about negative and positive self talk statements. During the activity, we had the girls put negative statements on a balloon and we popped it at the end. We did not receive all the permission slips for uploading pictures, so we sent out forms with the girls again. Once we get all the forms, we will upload pictures from our practices. Sheila and I are both going on the Europe trip, so we discussed with Karen White, Brenda Huff, Aubrey Spaeth, and Allison Self about which days we need covered while we are gone. We held a brief meeting with the girls before our practice and discussed with them who they will be running with in the 5k run. Their options included family members, high school students, or others in the community. The most popular vote among the kids was the choice to run with high school students.

Week Nine

This week, Katie and I had one practice on Wednesday with the girls due to Presidents Day. Our lesson this week was about how we all have STAR POWER and what makes our star inside of us shine. We did imagination activities about how clouds can cover our star, but the point was that the star is still shinning regardless of what is in front of it.  We did some fun activities with the girls and they trained for their 5k. Some girls met their goals and some did not. We have many pictures of the girls at practice, but we do not have permission to post them on our blogs or FRA twitter. We talked to Karen and made a permission slip for the girls to take home and have their parents to check off whether we have permission or not.  We are waiting to hear back from the parents before we start posting pictures of their daughters. We sent an email to the girls’ parents that included a form asking if we can post pictures of their daughter and asked them to return the form at our next practice. We are hoping all of the parents will sign the flyer, so we can post pictures on our blog. We are currently learning the next lesson for our practice on this coming Monday.
Girls on the Run is so much fun! Girls on the Run is #1!

Week Eight

This past week Sheila and I had our first practice on Monday, February 13, 2017 and our second practice on Wednesday, February 15, 2017. At our first practice we played name games, came up with our season expectations, bonding exercises, lessons about our uniqueness and taught the girls how to set goals and filled out identity cards. The second practice, we reflected on what we learned last practice, reviewed names, had a lesson on life traits that we are confident in and life traits that we are challenging ourselves to work on in our daily lives. Currently, we are preparing for our next practice which is on Wednesday, February 22, 2017 and learning the lesson that goes with it. Before the next practice, Sheila and I will study the next lesson which will build on the last lesson. We will set up before the girls get there on Wednesday. We will not have practice on Monday due to Presidents Day. We will also make copies of the handouts the girls need for that practice.
